When Pleasure Becomes A Convenience

Though I can’t even begin to fully encapsulate just how much I love a good outfit I’m certainly going to try.

I’m fortunate enough to be friends with some rather well clad lady friends who’s presence may just provide me with some aesthetic consistency. Maybe. You see I go through periods of neglect when I couldn’t be bothered to “dress the part”, “the position I want to be”, “express myself aesthetically” or whatever phrases are making their rounds when it comes to personal grooming these days but when I do see someone who just looks inspired I am always like why can’t I look like thaaaat!
I also just can’t seem to muster the effort of traveling or worse yet facing Sandton City and dealing with the mobs of people and the queues. God help me, those queues!
I can’t stand in a line for over a minute without a knee twitch developing accompanied by involuntary and exasperated sighs. Nowadays there’s this trinkle of boutiques from Randburg/Craighall all the way to town that seem so far away for a lady well nestled in lovely Fourways in and no way out, that I often wonder if I have to pack a skaftini just to check them. Why can’t I just subscribe to an emailer and you just send me a mailer with everything you have. That way if I think its worth it, I’ll call ahead to make sure you even have my size and then drive out. Just sayin'.
Apparently this is a characteristic of Generation Y, a generation that presumably prefers communicating via social media, messaging and emailing rather than face-to-face. I once read a Times article that also said that Generation Y’s wanted to do far less for more and that we felt and operated from a place of entitlement which some say is a result of "our parents" who have most likely come from previously disadvantaged backgrounds and have over compensated when raising us. Considering I haven’t really stopped working since I was 16years old, I’m not entirely inclined to agree but if us being not too scared to question authority and generally being pegged as a generation that thrives for a work life balance then cool, maybe I can live with that. But back to the world of shopping convenience. The online reality of being able to not only draw inspiration from various fashion bloggers, style collages and look books but actually being pointed to where you can get a similar look and if you like this you’re probably into this as well, is an absolute delight because honestly I do not have the time! I'd rather be part of what Polyvore has coined as “collective fashion consciousness” as I review the latest in their http://lookbook.nu/. So when Yumna said she had some additional stock that she thought friends and I would be interested in, I suggested a wine and cheese affair at my place with select friends. I once attended something familiar minus the cheese and anti platter. Machere, a local designer was having a sale at her beautiful home in one of Johannesburg's leafier suburbs. I thought it was really cool and this was an opportunity to relive said convenience with me home gals.

Thank you to Yumna for coming through, most of us left with our wallets a little slimmer.
