Yesterday my son and I hooked
up with the aunties MK and Tebogo for Sunday downtime. After a relatively
hectic weekend, flash backs to Lucia’s birthday party, Taboo, a bar tending
stint as well as a short lived dj'ing career later and this is exactly what the
doctor ordered! (details of which are to follow in next weeks post) Sunday lunch at Junipas was a welcomed relief. It took my son
and I 4 hours to get ready, single moms can proceed to testify. EVERYTHING takes
longer when tending to a child. So 4 hrs of preparation later I rolled up to MK’s
spot and after much deliberation decided to avoid the regular spots and see
what was really good at Hobart Grove.
Mk ordered the beef fillet accompanied
by potato wedges, crispy green beans & a Mediterranean Salsa and I, a designer vegetarian pizza. Fig, tallegio
& ricotta with sage and honey. Now as one black person to another I need
not explain my affinity for 4 legged creatures that once walked the earth
namely pig, cow, lamb, sheep, kudu, wildebees etc so to choose a vegetarian meal and
not supplement it with a side of say, wings or even chicken livers is saying
something. Yum! If you’re in a “detox” kinda mood I would suggest it. On the
drive back home I told MK I was definitely going to make my own version but, she sheepishly admits, with pancetta.
Before the infamous laugh-cry
Immediately after said laugh-cry. wtfrickadel?
Tebogo joined us and we
spoke as we always do about boys, relationships and generally things around
sistahood. Unlike most conversations this was centered around concern. Our
concerns with respect to our relationships with other women, them with certain boys
and or undesirables etc. The
general theme was on the quality of our relationships. As we get
older it is definitely something we’ve all had to pay particular attention to.
I think that we’re all alot more aware of the company we keep. I for one,
often accused of not being open minded, have tried my best in letting go of
certain prejudices and letting more people into my life. It’s so important that
you keep yourself surrounded by like-minded individuals and to never shy from
those personalities that are bigger than yours. Just mulling over the people
who we attract and chose to retain I’m reminded by a quote I read on http://allencoleman.tumblr.com.
Amidst the dope street fashion photography was this;
"Surround yourself with successful
people and jealousy will rent your mind for a while but motivation will move in
forever".
In a much earlier exchange with Tebogo we
spoke at great length about the fine balance between the social activities, the
time for self and time where you can say you genuinely engaged with another.
Its so easy to get caught up in the cycle of dinners, Champagne Thursdays, Tequila Tuesdays, Sunday lunches over here and finally to drinks at this
place or the other that you can get lost in it as much as the average 22 year
old gets lost at ALS.
I think that was what was so nice about
Sunday. It was lazy and real. Not heightened as it usually is and don’t get me
wrong, there’s nothing wrong with those moments but we’re all about balance
right? Right.
A Sunday lunch with my son’s occasional laugh-cry over MK’s and Tebogos “ohmigads” and occasional “friend!” and “you know what I mean”. Between the 2 of these aunties the phrases are worse for wear! The laugh-cry I’m referring to is a copyrighted mixture of a laugh and cry that my son has perfected. Is he crying, laughing perhaps still deciding? Who knows!*chuckles*

Really though, here’s to the pauses in-between the rawkus.
Until next time, Feast!
